Pelecorhynchidae View in CoL ( Fig. 23 View FIGURES 20–25 )
The Pelecorhynchidae View in CoL comprises 51 extant species in three genera ( Llanos et al. 2015). Its classification remained stable since Mackerras & Fuller (1942) proposed it as a family, although some studies have argued that it would be more closely related to Rhagionidae View in CoL or Tabanidae ( Kerr 2010) View in CoL . Two species were recently described by Llanos & González ( Llanos et al. 2015), increasing the number to nine species for Chile (González & Elgueta 2020). Recently, González et al. (2023c) re-established the generic status of Coenura Bigot, 1857 , and together with Pelecorhynchus Macquart View in CoL are the only genera present in the southern South America.
