Type host. Motacilla alba Linnaeus, 1758 — pied wagtail.

Remarks. Only one female with this name was examined by us, and it is a member of the Philopterus -complex, though Hopkins & Clay (1952) assigned this species to Sturnidoecus . The original description ( Piaget, 1885) agrees well with our specimen, including the statement by Piaget (1885: 6) that it has two pairs of setae on the temporal margin, one long and one short. In the female examined by us, the mts 1 is shorter than the mts 3, but both are considerably longer than the remaining mts . Piaget (1885: 6) also mentions that the clypeal signature of this species gradually fades posteriorly, which is typical for the Philopterus -complex, but not seen in Sturnidoecus . We therefore conclude that Docophorus aenas is a member of the Philopterus-compl ex, and may be a junior synonym of Philopterus passerinus ( Denny, 1842) , but no comparison with other material from the type host was made to ascertain this.
