Alterosa paranaensis , new species
Figs. 10 View FIGURE 10 A–D
Alterosa paranaensis sp. nov. resembles Alterosa tripuiensis Blahnik 2005 and A. schadrackorum Blahnik 2005 in the general shape of segment IX, and inferior appendages. These species also shares the unusual intermediate appendages, which form short, rounded, spinose processes, and the presence of large, phallic spines. It differs from A. tripuiensis in that the intermediate appendages are covered by small sensillae and by the lack of mesal projection over the base of tergum X. It can be distinguished from A. schadrackorum by the different shape and position of wing-like expansion on tergum X, and by the shape of 2nd article of each inferior appendage, which are not quite truncate. Additionally, the new species can be diagnosed by the subapical, serrate wing-like expansion on tergum X and the short 2nd article of each inferior appendage.
Adult. Color (in alcohol) brown; legs, palps, and antennae pale brown, wing pattern not discernible. Male forewings each 5.8–6.4 mm (n=4); female 6.4 mm (n=1).
Male genitalia. Tergum VIII with posteromesal margin scarcely or not emarginate. Sternum IX with anterolateral margins broadly rounded and projecting in dorsal half; posterolateral margins distinctly invaginated dorsally, not produced ventrally ( Fig. 10 View FIGURE 10 A). Tergum IX greatly reduced, membranous or fused to base of tergum X ( Fig. 10 View FIGURE 10 B). Tergum X subtriangular in dorsal view, tapered from base; tergum subapically with broad wing-like expansions, bearing serrate margins; preapically with acute, crest-like dorsal projection; apex sensillate, rounded as viewed dorsally, subtruncate and greatly enlarged in lateral view ( Figs. 10 View FIGURE 10 A, 10B). Intermediate appendages short, wing-like, with numerous short sensilla, forming basal spinose processes ( Figs. 10 View FIGURE 10 A, 10B). Preanal appendages moderately elongate, club-like, covered with stiff, small setae; apex rounded with subacuminate projection apicoventrally and with small apical setae as viewed laterally and dorsally ( Figs. 10 View FIGURE 10 A, 10B). Inferior appendages elongate, relatively wide, setose; 1st article, in lateral view, approximately 2 times as long as wide; 2nd article shorter and narrower than 1st article, its base slightly narrower than apex of 1st article, slightly enlarged and rounded apically, with prominent pad of short, stiff apicomesal setae ( Figs. 10 View FIGURE 10 A, 10C). Phallobase tubular, short, weakly curved ventrad; endotheca with 8 large spines; phallotremal sclerites indistinct ( Fig. 10 View FIGURE 10 D).

Paratypes: BRAZIL: Paraná: Same data as holotype, 4 males (DZRJ 3492).
Distribution: Brazil (Paraná state).
Etymology: The epithet of the specific name, paranaensis , refers to Paraná, the southern Brazilian state where the type specimens were collected.
