Macronema hyalinum var. Ulmer 1913: 395 [wings].

Macronema erichsoni Banks 1920: 356 , Plate 5 [type locality: French Guiana, Nouveau Chantier; MCZ; ♀; wings]; Mosely 1931: 170 [distribution]; Fischer 1963: 184 [bibliography, distribution]; Flint 1967: 9, Plate 1 [holotype; wings]; Flint 1974: 105, 108 [♂; distribution]; Flint 1978: 389, 400, 413, 416 [distribution; ♂, wings]; Macrostemum erichsoni (Banks 1920) ; Flint et al. 1999: 68 [taxonomic notes; distribution]; Paprocki et al. 2004: 8 [distribution].

The male genitalia of this species resemble those of Macrostemum santaeritae . In M. erichsoni the anterior margins of abdominal segment IX are sinuous in lateral view and the phallotremal sclerite is falciform, with the anterior margin deeply concave in ventral view. In addition, the forewings of this species each has a distinct hyaline Cshaped spot in the apical area.

Synopsis. Adults in alcohol. Forewing mean length 10.4 mm (9.53–11.37 mm, n=54). Head black, with yellow spot behind eyes. Compound eyes black. Scapes black, with brown setae. Maxillary palps yellow, with yellow setae. Prothorax yellow. Meso- and metathorax brown, with or without yellow spots. Legs brownish-yellow. Tibial spur formula 1,4,4. Forewings dark, with hyaline marks, each bearing distinct hyaline C-shaped spot on its apical area; discoidal cell present; radial sector normal ( Fig. 9 View FIGURE 9 A).

Male genitalia. Abdominal segment IX, in lateral view, with anterior and posterior margins sinuous; posterior margin deeply notched, bordered by setae above and below notch ( Fig. 9 View FIGURE 9 B); in dorsal view with posterior margin bearing slight medial prominence and medium setae bordering right and left margins ( Fig. 9 View FIGURE 9 E). Segment X, in dorsal view, bilobed, each lobe apically rounded and with subapical wart and pair of longitudinal rows of short, subdorsal setae from midlength to subapical wart ( Fig. 9 View FIGURE 9 E); in lateral view, subtriangular to nearly elliptical, apex round; with longitudinal row of small subdorsal setae from midlength to subapical wart, cluster of small ventrolateral setae ( Fig. 9 View FIGURE 9 B). Inferior appendage uniformly wide and uniformly covered by small setae; basal segment approximately same length as apical segment, with longer setae at dorsal apex; apical segment slightly upcurved and slightly clavate ( Fig. 9 View FIGURE 9 B). Phallus arched; apex slightly angled ( Fig. 9 View FIGURE 9 C); phallotremal sclerite falciform, without dorsal processes, its posterior margin concave, anterior margin convex ( Fig. 9 View FIGURE 9 D); phallotrema rounded, concave, apically positioned on posterodorsal surface of phallus ( Fig. 9 View FIGURE 9 D).
