Genyocerus biporus (Schedl) View in CoL

( Figs 1–4 View PLATE 1 )

Diacavus biporus Schedl, 1942: 217 View in CoL .

Genyocerus biporus (Schedl) View in CoL : Browne, 1977: 97.

Diacavus intermedius Browne, 1968: 134 View in CoL . n. syn.

Taxonomy: We have compared the male lectotype of D. biporus (NMW) View in CoL and a further male determined by Schedl with a long series of both sexes in RAB's collection, which had earlier been compared to the male holotype and male and female paratypes of D. intermedius (BMNH) View in CoL . Only a single species is represented. Browne (1968) suggested that the two species were distinguishable by the smaller size of G. biporus View in CoL and differences in the shape of the elytral teeth of the male. However, it seems possible that he had not examined the lectotype of G. biporus View in CoL , because his description of the elytral teeth of G. biporus View in CoL as 'of subequal breadth and truncate' is incorrect and apparently based on a misidentified specimen in BMNH. The elytral teeth have the same form in the male types of both species.

Distribution: The species is distributed from northeastern India (Assam) through Southeast Asia to Indonesia and the Philippines. It has often been intercepted in Japan in timber from the region but is not known to be established there.

Biology: Recorded only from genera belonging to the family Dipterocarpaceae ( Anisoptera , Dipterocarpus , Dryobalanops , Hopea , Parashorea , Shorea ). It usually attacks freshly cut logs ( Browne 1961a).
