Bunomys fratrorum (Thomas 1896) View in CoL

[Mus] fratrorum Thomas 1896 View in CoL , Ann. Mag. Nat. Hist., ser. 6, 18: 246.

Type Locality: Indonesia, NE Sulawesi, Rurukan, 3500 ft (1067 m).

Vernacular Names: Northeastern Peninsula Bunomys.

Distribution: Sulawesi; Endemic to NE region of N peninsula.

Conservation: IUCN – Lower Risk (nt).

Discussion: Bunomys fratrorum Group. Despite Thomas' clear declaration that fratrorum was distinct from chrysocomus , an evaluation also supported by Tate (1936) and Sody (1941), fratrorum was listed as a synonym of B. chrysocomus by Ellerman (1949 a) and Laurie and Hill (1954). The two are sympatric on the NE peninsula ( Musser, 1970 d, 1981 c, 1991; Musser and Newcomb, 1983; Musser, ms). In contrast to C Sulawesi where three species of the B. fratrorum species-complex are altitudinally distributed in a pattern of parapatric ranges, B. fratrorum is the only representative on the NE peninsula where it inhabits tropical evergreen rainforest formations from lowlands to high in mountains. Sody (1941) designated fratrorum as the type species of Frateromys .
