Tribe Macrotomini (Macrotomina) View in CoL View at ENA Thomson, 1861

The tribe Macrotomini is divided into six subtribes; Macrotomina is composed of 168 species in 46 genera and is the only subtribe with known immature stages. The larva of Archodontes melanopus (Linnaeus, 1767) , from the USA, was briefly described by Craighead (1915). The larva had been compared with Orthosoma Audinet-Serville, 1832 by Packard (1890). Based on the brief description, the larva of A. melanopus is characterized by having: integument smooth, shining with sparse setae; abdominal segments with retractile ambulatory ampullae not divided by a median impressed line; epistomal margin projected above clypeal base in two broadly triangular lobes; legs present.
