TYPE LOCALITY: "Brasilia;" restricted to the Atlantic drainage of the Brazilian states of Bahia, Espirito Santo, and Rio de Janeiro, by Wetzel and Avila-Pires (1980) .
DISTRIBUTION: Coastal forests of SE Brazil.
STATUS: U.S. ESA and IUCN - Endangered.
SYNONYMS: crinitus Gray, 1850 ; cristatus Hamilton-Smith, 1827 ; mareyi Anthony, 1907 ; melanotis Swainson, 1835 .
COMMENTS: Some authors believe erroneously that B. torquatus liliger, 1811, is a nomen nudum and attribute the name to Desmarest (1816a).
