Typus generis: Barypalpus ruficornis Cameron 1932

DIAGNOSIS: The genus shares most characters with Algon , but may be easily separated from it by the simple (not bisinuate) posterior margin of tergite VIII in both sexes. From Rientis , which also has a simple posterior margin of tergite VIII, it may be separated as follows: clypeus hardly produced anteriad, slightly tapering toward labrum, a large portion of smooth circum-antennal area can be seen when viewed from above ( Rientis : clypeus not tapering toward labrum, produced anteriad, circum-antennal area almost perpendicular to dorsal surface of head, thus only small portion visible when viewed from above); last labial palpomere with broad longitudinal depression on medial face, terminal sensorial area ( Fig. 7 ) distinctly crescent-shaped ( Rientis : medial face of last labial palpomere with indistinct depression distally, terminal sensorial area thus oblong oval or bone-shaped ( Fig. 8 )); gular sutures ( Fig. 5 ) contiguous ( Rientis : gular sutures separated ( Fig. 6 )); eyes markedly shorter than temples ( Rientis : eyes markedly longer than temples); basiscutellum almost impunctate ( Rientis : distinctly to coarsely punctate). Both genera share a pair of short, slightly oblique accessory lines at base of tergites III–V, with slight depression between those lines.
