Type Locality: " Madagascar ".

Vernacular Names: Malagasy Civet.

Synonyms: Fossa daubentonii Gray 1865 ; Fossa majori Dollman 1909 .

Distribution: Endemic to Madagascar.

Conservation: CITES – Appendix II; IUCN – Vulnerable.

Discussion: The commonly used Viverra fossa Schreber, 1777 , is a junior synonym (G. Petter, 1962, 1974).
