Distribution: Alaska and Canada, NW USA to S California and W South Dakota (Black Hills), NE USA to S Appalachian Mtns.
Conservation: U.S. ESA – Endangered as G. s. coloratus and G. s. fuscus; IUCN – Endangered as G. s. griseifrons, Data Deficient as G. s. californicus, Vulnerable as G. s. coloratus and G. s. fuscus, otherwise Lower Risk (lc) as G. sabrinus .
Discussion: Reviewed by Wells-Gosling and Heaney (1984, Mammalian Species No. 229). Subspecies according to Hall (1981); also see Arbogast (1999) who presented evidence that a western clade consisting of oregonensis and californicus may be of full species rank.
