Distribution. Western Pacific (Tokara Is, Kiribati, New Caledonia, French Polynesia). Indian Ocean ( Mozambique, Madagascar). The species has not been recorded from Australia but could be expected to occur there.
Description. The sessile zooids have circular and radial muscles around each siphon and a limited number of transverse bands crossing the dorsum between them, a smooth stomach, up to 12 testis follicles and 8–14 rows of stigmata.
Remarks. Ecteinascidia faaopa is not significantly different from the present species. Ecteinascidia bandaensis Millar, 1975 , which Monniot (1997b) thought to be a synonym of the present species, differs in its stalked zooids and a spiral stomach ridge (see Nishikawa, 1986).
