Proceros velutinus Blanchard, 1847 , page 273, figs.
Eurylepta velutina ( Blanchard, 1847) Diesing 1850 , page 210.
Material examined. Two specimens from Arrecife, Lanzarote and Tenerife ( Fig. 1 View FIGURE 1 , L2, T4 and T5; Table 1 and 2). Type locality. Gulf of Genova , Italy ( Blanchard 1847).
Distribution. Suez Canal, Egypt ( Palombi 1928); Rovigno, Croatia ( Vàtova 1928); Canary Archipelago: Arrecife, Lanzarote (De Vera et al. 2009).
Occurrence in the Canary Island. Pseudoceros velutinus was observed at depths of 1–3 metres, during the spring, summer and earlier autumn time.
Taxonomic remarks. The specimens studied are agreeing with the description of Pseudoceros velutinus Lang 1884 . This species is characterised by a uniform black pigmentation having a velvet-like appearance, an unpigmented region around the eyes, arrowhead-shaped cerebral eyes and short and small pseudotentacles.
On the other hand and due to its characteristic black coloration and body shape, we assume that the specimens determined and photographed by Vega et al. 2009 as Pseudocerotidae sp. 2 belong to P. velutinus .
