Type species: Gymnobela engonia Verrill, 1884 , by subsequent designation.
Remarks: The genus Gymnobela is characterized by strongly shouldered shells, usually plump and short in general shape, with a weak or absent subsutural spiral cord, shallow anal sinus and diagonally cancelled protoconch. (Adapted from Verrill, 1884 and Powell, 1966.)
