Type Locality: Italy, Sicily, Palermo.

Vernacular Names: Sicilian Shrew.

Distribution: Sicily, Egadi Isls and Ustica ( Italy), and Gozo ( Malta); extinct in Malta.

Conservation: IUCN – Lower Risk (lc).

Discussion: Revised by Hutterer (1991), who recognized one extinct and three extant subspecies. Formerly included in leucodon , russula , or suaveolens ; but the species has a distinct karyotype ( Sara and Vitturi, 1996; Vogel, 1988) and morphology ( Vogel et al., 1989). Temporal and geographic variation studied by Hutterer (1991), Sara (1995, 1996), and Sara and Vitturi (1996).
