Type Locality: Indonesia, Prov. of Papua (= Irian Jaya), Vogelkop, Manokwari Div., Arfak Mtns.
Vernacular Names: Western Long-beaked Echidna.
Synonyms: Zaglossus goodfellowi (Thomas 1907) ; Zaglossus gularis W. Rothschild 1922 ; Zaglossus nigro-aculeatus (W. Rothschild 1892) ; Zaglossus pallidus W. Rothschild 1922 ; Zaglossus tridactyla (Dubois 1882) ; Zaglossus villosissima (Dubois 1884) .
Distribution: Western New Guinea, west of Paniai Lakes; Salawati Isl ( Indonesia).
Conservation: CITES - Appendix II; IUCN – Endangered.
Discussion: Does not include bartoni and bubuensis; see Flannery and Groves (1998).
