Diplopanax stachyanthus Handel-Mazzetti (1933: 198) .

Type:— CHINA. Guangxi [Kwangsi]: Luocheng Xian [Luchen], [Bin Long, Min Shan], elev. ca. 1200 m, 14 June 1928, R. C. Ching 5969 (lectotype designated here, NAS00071983 ; isolectotypes A00075389 , CQNM0015719 , NAS00071984 , NY00169046 , PE01432769 ).

Note:— In the protologue, Handel-Mazzetti (1933) cited a single gathering R. C. Ching 5969 as the type, but he did not specify the herbarium where the type specimen is deposited. Li (1942) indicated that isotypes are deposited at LU (now in SYS) and NY, but he did not indicate the herbarium where the holotype is deposited. Because he did not accept any specimen as the lectotype using the term “type” or holotype or its equivalent, Li did not achieve to designate a lectotype for the name. In search of the duplicates in various herbaria, six duplicates were traced at A, CQNM, NAS, NY and PE. The Ching’s investigation to Guangxi 1928 was supported by the Herbarium of the Metropolitan Museum of Natural History , Nanking , China and labeled as such. Among of traced duplicates, two duplicates at NAS bear typewritten identification label and it is indicated that they were identified by Handel-Mazzetti. The duplicates at PE and NY do not bear the original identification label of Handel-Mazzetti. The duplicate at A was transferred for LU in 1954. Therefore, the duplicate NAS00071983 is designated here as the lectotype due to its better condition. The duplicate at LU might be transferred to SYS ( Thiers 2021), but it is not traced by the present authors.
