10. Cnidoscolus angustidens Torr., Rep. U.S. Mex. Bound. Botany View in CoL 2(1): 198 (1859).— Cnidoscolus angustidens Torr. subsp. angustidens — Jatropha angustidens (Torr.) Müll.Arg. in DC., Prodr. 15(2): 1102 (1866). Type:— MEXICO. Sonora: Valley of the Santa Cruz River, without date, A. Schott s.n. (lectotype NY-00246382!, designated by Steinmann & Felger (1997)). Jatropha pringlei (I.M.Johnst.) Standl., Contr. U.S. Natl. Herb. 23: 1670 (1926).— Cnidoscolus pringlei I.M.Johnst., Contr. Gray Herb.
68: 85 (1923).— Cnidoscolus angustidens subsp. dentatus Fern.Casas, Fontqueria View in CoL 55: 469 (2011). Type:— MEXICO. Jalisco:
Guadalajara, Barranca, June 1886, E. Palmer 141 (holotype GH-00047019!; isotypes BM-000820474!, K-000254129!, NY-
00246395!, P-00545797!, US-00096486!, US-00902255!, YU-244718!).
Distribution:— Mexico, United States.
Notes:— Breckon in his doctoral thesis( Breckon1975)recognized four subspecies within Cnidoscolus angustidens, subsp. angustidens , the two treated below, and subsp. dentatus . The latter was circumscribed to include plants from Guerrero distinguished by having leaves with an obtrullate apical lobe, with deltoid marginal teeth and lacking petiolar glands. When Fernández Casas (2012g) validated Breckon’s name, he choose a holotype that was different from that proposed by Breckon and which belongs instead to subsp. angustidens . Because the inclusion of the author before “ex” is not mandatory we prefer to attribute the name to only Fernández Casas. Thus, subsp. dentatus as treated by Breckon remains to be formally described.
10.1. Cnidoscolus angustidens subsp. calyculatus (Pax & K.Hoffm.) Breckon ex Fern.Casas, Fontqueria View in CoL 56: 277 (2012).— Jatropha calyculata Pax & K.Hoffm., Pflanzenr. IV. 147. I (Heft 42): 97 (1910).— Cnidoscolus calyculatus (Pax & K.Hoffm.) I.M.Johnst., Contr. Gray Herb. 68: 86 (1923). Type:— MEXICO. Michoacán: environs de la Pitirem, 200 m, 13 July 1898, E. Langlassé 244 (lectotype G-00439800!, designated here; isolectotypes GH-00047013!, K-000254135!, P-00545647!, P-00545648!, US!).
Distribution:— Mexico.
Notes:— This combination was initially proposed by Breckon (1975) in his doctoral thesis, but Fernández Casas (2012g) validly published it. The holotype in B was probably destroyed; here we designate a duplicate at G as lectotype.
10.2. Cnidoscolus angustidens subsp. orbiculatus (Lundell) Breckon ex Fern.Casas, Fontqueria View in CoL 56: 255 (2012).— Cnidoscolus orbiculatus Lundell, Bull. Torrey Bot. View in CoL Club 72: 325 (1945). Type:— MEXICO. Morelos: about 9 kilometers beyond Alpuyeca on Cacahuamilpa road, 31 July 1943, C.L. Lundell & A.A. Lundell 12312 (holotype LL-00371621!; isotypes BRIT-23466!, CAS-0002045!, K-000254114!, K-000254115!, LL-00256914, MICH-1115867!, NY-00246393 !, S!, SMU, US-00096485 !).
Distribution:— Mexico.
Notes:— This combination was initially proposed by Breckon (1975) in his doctoral thesis, but Fernández Casas (2012f) validly published it.
