Anillinus magnus Zaballos and Mateu, 1997 View in CoL

Anillinus magnus Zaballos and Mateu 1997: 137 View in CoL .

The illustrations of the single female type of the species do not offer much for comparison because the spemathecae of many species of Anillinus View in CoL have not been studied thoroughly. But, two groups of eastern U.S. Anillinus View in CoL are well-known in that respect ( Sokolov et al. 2007; Sokolov and Carlton 2010), allowing insight as to the affinities of A. magnus View in CoL . The most distinctive features of the spermatheca of A. magnus View in CoL are the sharp differentiation of the distal and proximal parts of cornu and a bulb-like enlargement of the ramus. This type of spermatheca does not match Anillinus View in CoL spermathecae that have been described. The latter are characterized by the gradual transition between the distal and proximal parts of the cornu and the reduced and undifferentiated ramus zone. However, the spermathecal morphology of Serranillus species (Sokolov and Carlton 2008) is quite consistent with that of A. magnus View in CoL , based on the description and illustration. Serranillus View in CoL spermathecae possess sclerotized distal parts of the cornu having a beanlike shape, while the proximal part of the cornu is unsclerotized and straight. The ramus is well differentiated, sclerotized, and ovoid. Comparison of the figures of the spermatheca of A. magnus View in CoL with those of Serranillus View in CoL suggests a near perfect match ( Fig. 2 View Fig ). Accordingly, we conclude that A. magnus View in CoL does not belong in Anillinus View in CoL , but rather in Serranillus View in CoL .

NOMENCLATURAL CHANGES

Based on the evidence presented above, we propose the following taxonomic changes:

Anillinus steevesi Barr, 1995 = Anillinus minor Zaballos and Mateu, 1997 , new synonym.

Serranillus magnus (Zaballos and Mateu, 1997) , new combination = Anillinus magnus Zaballos and Mateu, 1997 .
