scientific name

Macrostoma Swinderen , 1822: 87
status

Macrostoma Swinderen, 1822: 87 .

TYPE SPECIES: Syrphus micans Fabricius, 1794

CURRENT STATUS: junior synonym of Volucella Geoffroy, 1762 , n. syn.

FAMILY: SYRPHIDAE .

REMARKS: Swinderen’s descriptive term for the genus-group name “Grootbekken” [= large mouth] is construed as enough to make the generic name available. Additionally, the inclusion of a single species ( micans ) is determined here to be the same a Syrphus micans Fabricius, 1775 , which makes the genus-group name available by including a specific name that can be unambiguously assigned to a nominal species-group taxon (ICZN Code Art. 12.2.5). Syrphus micans Fabricius, 1775 is currently a junior synonym of Musca inanis Linnaeus, 1758 and placed in Volucella Geoffroy, 1762 [teste Peck (1988: 129)]. Macrostoma Swinderen, 1822 is thus treated here as a junior synonym of Volucella Geoffroy, 1762 , n. syn. Although synonymized with Volucella Geoffroy, 1762 , Macrostoma Swinderen, 1822 is potentially problematic as it is a senior homonym of the fish genus Macrostoma Risso, 1827 . Fortunately, the fish name was thought to have been preoccupied by a different fly genus, Macrostomus Wiedemann, 1817 (it is not preoccupied by it) and the genus Notoscopelus Günther, 1864 was used to replace it. Notoscopelus Günther, 1864 is the currently accepted name through prevailing usage [teste Castellanos-Galindo et a l. (2006: 260)]. So, al- though it was not preoccupied by Macrostomus Wiedemann, 1817 and it was not necessary to replace Risso’s name with Notoscopelus Günther, 1864 , Macrostomus Risso, 1827 now is preoccupied (by Macrostoma Swinderen, 1822 ) so Notoscopelus Günther, 1864 is the next available name to use it its place, and prevailing usage is moot.
