Phlugidini View in CoL is monophyletic and sister to the conehead katydids ( Conocephalinae View in CoL ; Fig. 11 View Fig ). Phlugidini View in CoL in this analysis includes the diminutive Phlugiola arborea (Nickle, 2002) View in CoL which was recovered as the sister lineage to the Old World Austrophlugis ( Rentz, 2001) View in CoL + the New World Phlugis View in CoL . This relationship implies a more recent dispersal back to Australia. Similarities between the other Meconematinae View in CoL tribes and Phlugidini View in CoL are apparently convergent and may be linked to the constraints that led to the independent derivations of these small, agile predatory katydids. The paraphyly of Meconematinae View in CoL was presented in earlier studies ( Mugleston et al. 2013, 2016) supporting Phlugidini View in CoL being separate from Meconematinae View in CoL and warranting the potential elevation of Phlugidini View in CoL from a tribe within the Meconematinae View in CoL to its own subfamily. Further work to revise Conocephalinae View in CoL may allude to characters that link Phlugidini View in CoL as an aberrant form of Conocephalinae View in CoL as has been suggested (CadenaCastañeda and García 2014).
