Description. Rostrum slender, reaching near to or beyond end of scaphocerite, posterior 2/3 straight, anterior 1/3 upturned; rostral formula: 1-4+10-15/4-10, unarmed on anterior third of dorsal margin. Antennal spine fused with inferior orbital angle. Pterygostomian angle broadly rounded.
Sixth abdominal somite 0.61–75 times of carapace, 1.8 times as long as fifth somite, slightly shorter than telson. Telson 3.3 times as long as wide, not terminating in a projection, with 5–6 pairs of dorsal spinules and one pair of dorsolateral spinules; distal end with about 3–4 pairs of spines, lateral pair distinctly longer than intermediates. Preanal carina low, with a small spine.
Eyes well developed, anterior end reaching to 0.7 times length of basal segment of antennular peduncle. Antennular peduncle 0.8–0.82 times as long as carapace; basal segment of antennular peduncle longer than sum of second and third segment lengths, anterolateral angle reaching 0.3 times length of the second segment, second segment distinctly longer than third segment. Stylocerite reaching 0.75 times length of basal segment of antennular peduncle. Scaphocerite 4.1 times as long as wide.
Incisor process of mandible ending in irregular teeth, molar process truncated. Lower lacinia of maxillula broadly rounded, upper lacinia elongated, with a number of distinct teeth on inner margin, palp slender. Upper endites of maxilla subdivided, palp elongated, scaphognathite tapering posteriorly with numerous long, curved setae at posterior end. Palp of first maxilliped rounded, ending in a finger-like projection. Podobranch of second maxilliped reduced to a lamina. Third maxilliped reaching to end of second segment of antennular peduncle, with ultimate segment slightly shorter than penultimate segment.
Epipod present on first pereiopod. First pereiopod reaching to distal end of basal segment of antennular peduncle; merus 2.4 times as long as broad, shorter than carpus; carpus excavated anteriorly, shorter than chela, 2.8 times as long as high; chela 2.2 times as long as broad; fingers 1.2 times longer than palm. Second pereiopod reaching to end of second segment of antennular peduncle; merus distinctly shorter than carpus, 4.4 times as long as broad; carpus 1.3 times as long as chela, 6.0 times as long as high; chela 3.1 times as long as broad; fingers 1.6 times as long as palm. Third pereiopod reaching near to end of antennular peduncle, propodus 11 times as long as broad, 4.0–5.0 times as long as dactylus; dactylus 2.7–3.2 times as long as wide (spines included), terminating in 1 claw, with 3–5 accessory spines on flexor margin. Fifth pereiopod reaching to end of basal segment of antennular peduncle, propodus 14 times as long as broad, 4.0–5.6 times as long as dactylus, dactylus 3.0 times as long as wide (spinules included), terminating in 1 claw, with 30–40 spinules on flexor margin. Endopod of male first pleopod sub-rectangular, with no appendix interna, 0.25 times length of exopod. Appendix masculina of male second pleopod slender, about half length of endopod.
Uropodal diaeresis with 9–14 movable spinules.
Eggs 0.90–1.3x 0.50–0.67 mm in diameter.
Habitat. lakes.
Remarks. Caridina masapi morphologically resembles Caridina loehae , but can be differentiated by its longer rostrum which reaches distinctly beyond the antennular peduncle (vs. does not reach in C. loehae ), the shorter antennular peduncle (0.8–0.82 times as long as carapace vs. 0.92–0.94 times in C. loehae ), the epipod being only present on the first pereiopod (present on first two pereiopods in C. loehae ), and the shorter dactylus of the last three pereiopods (propodus of third pereiopod 4.0–5.0 times as long as dactylus vs. 3.2 times in M. loehae ; propodus of fifth pereiopod 4.0–5.6 times as long as dactylus vs. 2.7 times in C. loehae ).
Distribution. All the Malili lakes in Central Sulawes, Indonesia.
