Eupatorium purpureum Linnaeus View in CoL , Species Plantarum 2: 838. 1753.
"Habitat in America septentrionali." RCN: 6064.
Lectotype (Wiegand & Weatherby in Rhodora 39: pl. 466. 1937): Herb. Linn. No. 978.13 ( LINN) .
Current name: Eupatorium purpureum L. View in CoL ( Asteraceae ).
Note: Wiegand (in Rhodora 22: 60. 1920) provided an extensive discussion of the original elements for this name which he applied in a sense different from that of Mackenzie (in Rhodora 22: 158-161. 1920; 29: 9. 1927). Mackenzie concluded that "the type … was the plant from which he [Linnaeus] drew his own description, quite probably the Hortus Cliffortianus plant …”, which Mackenzie believed to be E. maculatum L. See review by Reveal & al. (in Huntia 7: 221. 1987). Wiegand & Weatherby’s choice appears to be the earliest formal type designation. Lamond (in Mem. New York Bot. Gard. 72: 50, f. 29. 1995) also illustrates the type.
