Opisthonema oglinum (Lesueur 1818) View in CoL
Extant specimens: MCUC ZOO.0000031 ( Fig. 12 View FIGURE 12 ).
Classification on the specimen: “P. Abd. Clupea thrissa ”.
Common names on the specimen (Portuguese/Tupi): “Sardinha Laje”/ “Araberi”.
Comments: This species was undescribed at the time Veloso prepared it. In Ajuda’s inventory ( Ferreira 1794), a total of 32 herborized specimens of Clupea are documented, whereas the transference list to Coimbra includes two specimens of Clupea thrissa . It is probable that Veloso classified the specimen in question as Clupea thrissa Linnaeus 1758 (= Clupanodon thrissa ) a species native to the Pacific, based on the elongated last dorsal-fin ray. This species is not explicitly mentioned in Ichthyologia Fluminensis. The Portuguese common name continues to be utilized when referring to this species. This species occurs in the Western Atlantic from the Gulf of Maine to Argentina ( Figueiredo & Menezes 1978; Munroe & Nizinski 2002).
