Bodianus pulchellus (Poey 1860) View in CoL
Extant specimens: MCUC ZOO.0000065 ( Fig. 35 View FIGURE 35 ).
Classification on the specimen: “P. Th. Labrus coccineus ”.
Common names on the specimen (Portuguese/Tupi): “Bodião Vermelho”/ “Tetimixira”.
Comments: This species was undescribed at the time Veloso prepared it. The species name on the herbarium sheet, Labrus coccineus , is an unavailable name, suggesting that Veloso intended to name it. The same name is used in the description of this species in the Ichthyologia Fluminensis manuscript. There are 112 herborized specimens of Labrus listed in the Ajuda’s inventory ( Ferreira 1794), but no Labrus coccineus is found in the transference list to the University of Coimbra. The transference list to Lisbon Academy of Sciences, on the other hand, mentions two specimens, that are missing. In the Ichthyologia Fluminensis manuscript, Veloso also lists the ancient Tupi common name “Aipimixira”, and “bodião” is spelled “budião”. Bodianus pulchellus occurs in the Western Atlantic from South Carolina ( USA) to São Paulo ( Brazil) (Menezes & Figueiredo 1985; Westneat 2002).
