Scomberomorus brasiliensis Collette, Russo & Zavala-Camin 1978 View in CoL
Extant specimens: MCUC ZOO.0000045 ( Fig. 34 View FIGURE 34 ).
Classification on the specimen: “P. Th. Scomber ”.
Common names on the specimen (Portuguese/Tupi): None.
Comments: This species was undescribed at the time Veloso prepared it. There are 66 herborized specimens of Scomber listed in the Ajuda’s inventory ( Ferreira 1794), but no species in the transferences list to the University of Coimbra and to Lisbon Academy of Sciences can be unequivocally attributed to this specimen. The transference list to the university of Coimbra lists one specimen of Scomber scomber . This name is thought to be a misspelling by Linnaeus (1766) of his Scomber scombrus Linnaeus 1758 , and is considered a synonym of the latter. Scomber scombrus is superficially similar to Scomberomorus brasiliensis , what could indicate that this specimen is listed in the transference to the University of Coimbra as Scomber scomber .Additional evidence can be found in the Ichthyologia Fluminensis manuscript, which lists in the description of Scomber scomber , “Cavalla” as the common Portuguese name, a name still used in Brazil for the species of the genus Scomberomorus . Scomberomorus brasiliensis occurs in the Western Atlantic from Belize to Rio Grande do Sul ( Brazil) ( Collette 2002).
