Fistularia tabacaria Linnaeus 1758 View in CoL

Extant specimens: ACL-HN-0059 ( Fig. 32a View FIGURE 32 ) and ACL-HN-0058 ( Fig. 32b View FIGURE 32 ).

Classification on the specimen: “P. Abd. Fistularia tabaccaria [sic]”

Common names on the specimen (Portuguese/Tupi): “Trombêta”/ “Petumbuaba”.

Comments: The upper and lower portions of the herbarium sheet of ACL-HN-0059 are missing, resulting in the lack of information on the original classification and common names associated with this specimen. Furthermore, the entire head is missing. Despite these limitations, given the distinctiveness of this species, we hypothesize that it corresponds to the same species as ACL-HN-0058. There are seven herborized specimens of Fistularia mentioned in the Ajuda’s inventory ( Ferreira 1794), and one specimen of F. tabacaria is listed in the transference documentation to Lisbon Academy of Sciences. Two additional specimens are listed in the transference documentation to the University of Coimbra, but they are missing. This species is described in the Ichthyologia Fluminensis and includes the same common names. Antunes & Balbino (2003) also identified the specimens as F. tabacaria . Fistularia tabacaria occurs in the western Atlantic from Nova Scotia ( Canada) to São Paulo ( Brazil) ( Figueiredo & Menezes 1980; Fritzsche 2016) and the eastern Atlantic from Cape Verde and Mauritania to Angola ( Fritzsche 2016).
