Artemisia nuttallii View in CoL (Torr. & A. Gray) Mosyakin, L.M. Shultz & G.V. Boiko, comb. nov. ≡ Tanacetum nuttallii Torrey
& A. Gray (1843: 415) [non Tanacetum argenteum (Lam.) Willdenow (1789: 51 , tab. 2, fig. 4) ≡ Achillea argentea
Lamarck (1783: 29)] ≡ Sphaeromeria argentea Nuttall (1841: 402) [non Artemisia argentea L’Heritier (“1788”, Fasc.
4 published 1792: 13, tab. 28)] ≡ Artemisia macarthuri Sòn. Garcia et al. (2011: 161) , nom. illeg. superfl.
Protologue:—“In the Rocky Mountains, near the sources of the Platte, and Colorado of the West” ( Nuttall 1841: 402).
Type:— UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. [Probably Wyoming:] “R. Mts. nr [near] sourc. [source] of Riv. Platte”, [Nuttall] (BM [BM001119304], lectotype here designated, image available from JSTOR Global Plants (2017 –onward)).
Cronquist (1994: 144) cited the authentic specimen(s?) as: “ Nuttall. Rocky Mts., near the sources of the Platte, and Colorado of the West ; an original specimen at BM!” In our opinion, this statement cannot be regarded even as an effective first-step lectotypification, for at least two reasons: (1) Cronquist cited not an actual specimen but the exact phrase from the protologue; (2) he mentioned some specimen from BM but did not mention the word “ type ” or its equivalent (as required by Art. 7.10 of ICN: McNeill et al. 2012) and used an indefinite article (meaning “one of original specimens”). Thus, lectotypification was still needed .
We requested information on and images of an original specimen (or specimens) kept in BM and received an image of one sheet containing three mounted collections: BM001119304 (with two Nuttall’s labels with descriptions and geographical information on the second label, see above) ; BM001119302 (collected by C. C. Parry in 1873) ; and BM001119303 (collected by Marcus E. Jones in 1896). The specimen BM001119304 , consisting of three plants mounted in the upper part of the sheet, is designated here as the lectotype .
There are at least two other currently known original specimens: K000891695 (image available from JSTOR Global Plants 2017 –onward) and the specimen newly discovered in the Turczaninow herbarium at KW ( Figure 1 View FIGURE 1 ): “ Tanacetum nuttallii Torr. et Gray [name added by another hand and in darker ink–S.M.]. Sphaeromeria argentea . Nuttall. R. Mts.” (KW001002843). The specimen from K (Herbarium Hookerianum, K000891695) is represented by a small plant with two inflorescences. In contrast, the specimen from the Turczaninow herbarium at KW (KW001002843, isolectotype) consists of six well-preserved plants and plant fragments definitely belonging to Artemisia nuttallii ( Sphaeromeria argentea ).
