Type Locality: No locality given; based on the gouazoupoukou of Azara; restricted to Paraguay, Lake Ypoá, south of Asuncion (Cabrera, 1961:329).

Vernacular Names: Marsh Deer.

Distribution: N Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil (S of Amazon River), Paraguay, E Peru, and Uruguay.

Conservation: CITES – Appendix I; U.S. ESA – Endangered; IUCN – Critically Endangered (Paraná Brazilian Basin subpopulation), Endangered (Delta del Paraná subpopulation), otherwise Vulnerable.
