Synonyms: Gelada Gray 1843 ; Simopithecus Andrews 1916 .

Subspecies Theropithecus gelada subsp. obscurus Heuglin 1863

Discussion: Considered a distinct genus by Cronin and Meikle (1979:259), but Van Gelder (1977 b:8) included this genus in Cercopithecus ; Goodman et al. (1998) included it in Papio as a subgenus. McKenna and Bell (1997) placed it in a subtribe, Theropithecina, separate from Macacina ( Macaca ) and Papionina (all other genera of Papionini).
