Material examined

One adult specimen, CARIBE I, sta. 10, 20 ° 33’ 00” N; 87° 00’ 00” W; February 12 1991, 6:30 h, 50 m. Plankton trawl. Caribbean specimen damaged, first 8–10 parapodia reduced.

Diagnosis

Prostomium rounded, with pair of small eyes. Pharynx devoid of mandibles. First two segments with two pairs of tentacular cirri, first one smaller, devoid of setae, the second larger, with or without setae.

Remarks

The only specimen of I. phalacrophorus was collected between the island of Cozumel and the Yucatan Peninsula mainland; its estimated density in the area was 6.8 org./ 1000m 3 and represented 2 % of the iospilids collected in February 1991.

Bay of Algiers, Mediterranean.

Distribution

Mediterranean Sea, Atlantic Ocean, Indian Ocean, Pacific Ocean. This is the first record of this species in the Caribbean Sea.
