Body length 24.5–38. 3 mm (♂); 23.0–27.0 mm (♀) ( Zhang, 2007).
Description. Major male. Body brownish to reddish, surface weakly metallic, width of head, including mandibles, subequal to that of pronotum and elytra. Head brownish, surface smooth with little metallic luster; mandibles straight, not incurved apically; major inner mandibular tooth poorly developed or absent, bearing only 2–3 small inner mandibular teeth on each of mandibles; apical mandibular fork weakly developed, slightly open from front, upper branch of apical fork subequal in length of that of lower branch; anterolateral ridges of head subparallel, posterolateral margins of head evenly convex, only slightly wider than anterolateral ridges; clypeolabrum poorly developed, trapezoidal, labrum triangular, protruding at middle and lateral margins of labrum. Pronotum brownish to reddish, somewhat metallic, concolorous with head; surface smooth; pronotum weakly convex at apex and base, subequal in width to that of head and mandibles; prothoracic tibiae bright reddish or orange, each bearing four weakly developed but sharp spines from apex to midlength; mesothoracic tibiae bright reddish, each bearing two spines at midlength; metathoracic tibiae bright reddish, each bearing two poorly developed spines at basal 1/3. Elytra reddish, surface smooth and strongly metallic; slender, widest at apical 1/3, strongly narrowing along basal 1/3. Median and minor males same as major male. Genitalia. Ventral plate of 9th abdominal segment gradually widened and not constricted before caudal expansion; basal piece poorly defined and short, 0.8× length of entire aedeagus; apical flagellum weakly enlarged, flagellum 0.5× length of aedeagus; aedeagus stout, incurved along basal 1/3, triangular distally.
Female. Not examined.
Distribution. China (Taiwan).
Phenology. Adults were collected from mid-July.
Natural history. According to the current collection information, the adult flight season of L. datunensis is during mid-July. Adults exhibit a diurnal flight behavior associated with open areas along forests with some miscellaneous trees and herbaceous plants.
Collecting methods. Hand collected.
Discussion. Females of L. datunensis were not examined during this study, as this species has been forbidden to be collected for nearly 20 years. However, external characters of females are important when defining species groups of Lucanus and in associating different species into separate groups. According to Huang and Chen (2010), the female of L. datunensis may be described as follows: Head: 1) inner tooth of right mandible and right mandible slightly sinuate and weakly pointed distally; 2) outer margin of mandible evenly curved; 3) majority of the canthus markedly outside of the eye; 4) clypeolabrum in dorsal view pointed apically; Thorax: 5) pronotum evenly convex and not wider at anterior half; 6) apical fork of each prothoracic tibia with branches slenderer and sharper apically; 7) mesothoracic femora and metathoracic femora partly bright yellowish-brown; 8) dorsal surface of body blackish-brown; 9) metasternum not densely setose; 10) elytra without a marked pubescence. Based on descriptions given by Huang and Chen (2010), the female of L. datunensis fits the revised definition of the L. fortunei species group.
