Body length 25.3–53.5 mm (♂); 23.5–27.3 mm (♀).

Description. Major male. Head and pronotum reddish or brownish, covered with vestiture of long yellowish-amber setae; elytral surface bright yellow, excepting suture and lateral margins; head length, including mandibles 1.35× width of pronotum and elytra. Head brownish to reddish; mandibles incurved along basal 1/4 and apical 2/3; major inner mandibular tooth located 3/4 distance to apex, triangular protruding forward and inflated on either side, mandibles each with 5–6 small inner mandibular teeth; apical mandibular fork strongly developed, widely open anteriorly, upper and lower branches of apical fork subequal in length; lateral ridges of head subparallel, weakly rounded, evenly convex apically; clypeolabrum weakly developed, trapezoidal, labrum triangular, single-pointed at middle. Pronotum brownish to reddish, color usually darker than head; straight along apex and basal 1/3, weakly rounded at middle; width 0.7× that of head and mandibles; prothoracic tibiae yellowish with black inner lateral margins, and four weakly developed spines from apex to midlength; mesothoracic tibiae bright yellowish, each bearing two spines along midlength; metathoracic tibiae bright yellowish withblack apices, bearing a single spine at 1/3 length from base. Elytra orange or yellowish-amber, color usually significantly brighter than head and pronotum; apices, as well as lateral and suture margins blackish; oval-shaped, widest at apical 1/3, strongly narrow along basal 1/3. Median male as major male except: head with major inner mandibular tooth single-pointed, weakly triangular, pointing forward; <4 small inner mandibular teeth located below major tooth, upper and lower branches subequal in length. Minor male as major and median males except: head with major inner mandibular tooth weakly developed to absent, if present, single-pointed and not triangular; <5 small inner mandibular teeth located within mandibular margins. Genitalia. Ventral plate of 9th abdominal segment constricted before caudal expansion; basal piece usually well defined, 0.4–0.5× length of entire aedeagus; apical flagellum enlarged, flagellum 1.6–1.7× length of aedeagus; aedeagus slender, incurved along basal 1/3, triangular distally.

Female. Head and pronotum somewhat reddish or brownish, covered with vestiture of long yellowish-amber setae; elytra bright yellow, excepting sutural and lateral margins; body usually smaller than major and median males, subequal in length to or larger than minor male. Head brownish to reddish, surface punctate; mandibles incurved at basal 1/3 and apical 1/3; mandibular tooth weakly developed, asymmetrical; right mandibular tooth triangular, that of left smooth; preocular and postocular margins weakly developed, not forming an acute angle, or protruding apically; clypeolabrum weakly developed, triangular, single-pointed at the middle. Pronotum reddish to brownish; obscurely punctate; prothoracic tibiae brownish, punctate, bearing four spines from the apex to the midlength; distal two spines strongly developed; prothoracic tibiae 1.2– 1.4× width of mesothoracic and metathoracic tibiae; mesothoracic tibiae reddish to yellowish-amber, bearing 1–2 spines at midlength; metathoracic tibiae reddish to yellowish-amber, bearing a single spine along basal 1/3. Elytra apex black to brownish, central, and basal elytral surface yellowish-amber; each elytral suture with a black stripe; oval, widest at apical 1/3, strongly narrow at basal 1/3.

Distribution. China (Sichuan, Yunnan).

Phenology. Adults of L. delavayi were collected from late June to the mid-July. Populations in Yunnan Province tend to be active early than those of Sichuan.

Natural history. Typical host plants of L. delavayi vary, with heights around 6– 12 m. Lucanus delavayi is active at night around lights and can be collected at light-traps. Adult longevity is 13–20 days.

Collecting methods. Light-trap and net-trap collected.
