Etymology. This specific epithet denotes the long, erect setae on the appendages.
Diagnosis. Metajalysus pilosus ( Figs. 10–12 View FIGURES 7–12 ) is distinguished by the uniformly black head (except for the median and lateral carinae on the frons and vertex), extensively black abdomen, usually with only the ventral areas of segments 5–7 pale (except for a black ventral median line), the long femoral and tibial setae, and the distinct inverted V-shaped process ( Figs. 28–30 View FIGURES 17–31 ) on the male genital aperture.
This species is most similar to M. horvathi ( Figs. 7–9 View FIGURES 7–12 ) in having a similarly black head and markings on the abdomen. It differs from M. horvathi in having consistently longer setae on the antennae and legs, a distinct inverted V-shaped process on the genital aperture ( Figs. 28–30 View FIGURES 17–31 ), and a more stout down-curving arm on the parameres ( Fig. 31 View FIGURES 17–31 ).
Description. Male (n = 5; holotype measurements in parentheses): Length 3.23–3.62 mm (3.30 mm), width 0.80–0.83 mm (0.82 mm). Head: Length 0.42–0.50 mm (0.48 mm), width across eyes 0.35–0.37 mm (0.35 mm), interocular width 0.24–0.26 mm (0.24 mm). Labium: Length 1.15–1.18 mm (1.15 mm). Antenna: Scape length 1.70–1.92 mm (1.85 mm); pedicel, 0.64–0.74 mm (0.74 mm); basiflagellomere, 1.25–1.41 mm (1.41 mm); distiflagellomere, 0.51–0.58 mm (0.51 mm). Pronotum: Median length 0.67–0.70 mm (0.69 mm), posterior width 0.58–0.61 mm (0.61 mm). Femoral lengths: Pro- 1.15–1.31 mm (1.28 mm); meso- 1.31–1.50 mm (1.47 mm); meta- 1.86–2.08 mm (2.08 mm). General color yellowish brown, with extensive black areas. Head: Black, except for lateral and median (when present) carinae; each lateral carina with one long seta and middle carina or midline with a row of 3 or 4 setae; eyes and ocelli reddish brown. Labium: Yellowish brown, segment I darker brown except at apex, extending to base of metasternum. Antenna: Scape, pedicel, and basiflagellomere uniformly yellowish brown, distiflagellomere black except for brown apex; scape and pedicel with widely spaced setae two to three times diameter of segments, basiflagellomere with shorter more dense setae subequal to diameter of segment. Pronotum ( Fig. 16 View FIGURES 13–16 ): Yellowish brown, calli darker brown, anterolateral angle and lateral margin along carina black, carinae yellow to yellowish brown; each side of disc with 3 to 5 long erect setae, point of each posterior tubercle with 2 or 3 setae. Scutellum: Yellowish brown, raised tubercle yellow. Hemelytron: Translucent; veins brown to dark brown, with a slender to quadrate brown spot on either side of middle; membrane with brown patches between veins. Ventral surface: Thorax shiny black; basal three quarters of abdomen black, apical third to one quarter and genital capsule yellow or pale yellowish white, with evenly scattered, somewhat thickened setae. Ostiolar evaporative area: Uniformly whitish yellow. Legs: Coxa brown to dark brown, with apices paler; femora yellowish brown, with long erect setae subequal to or longer than diameters of segments, tibiae yellowish brown with apices darker brown, with long erect setae 2 or more times the diameter of segments.
Male genitalia: Genital capsule ( Figs. 28–30 View FIGURES 17–31 ) with middle ventral margin of aperture with an inverted V-shaped process; parameres ( Fig. 31 View FIGURES 17–31 ) with smaller hind arm elongate, curved, and directed upward.
