( Figs 1, 2 View FIGURES 1 – 6 , 7 View FIGURES 7 – 8 , 9 View FIGURES 9 – 17 , 18, 19 View FIGURES 18 – 25 , 26 View FIGURES 26 – 32 , 33 View FIGURES 33 – 41 , 42 View FIGURES 42 – 44 )

Galerotella asahinai Chûjô, 1962: 33 .

Issikia asahinai: Kimoto, 1966: 26 ; Kimoto, 1969: 24; Kimoto, 1991: 9; Takizawa et al., 1995: 10.

Male. Length 5.6–7.3 mm. Color ( Figs 1–2 View FIGURES 1 – 6 ): brown to dark brown; antennae and legs blackish brown. Sculpture: head and pronotum with large, extremely dense punctures, punctures on elytra relatively smaller. Antenna short, reaching mid-point of body, all antennomeres elongate, relative length of antennomeres II–XI about 1.0: 1.3: 1.2: 1.4: 1.2: 1.3: 1.2: 1.2: 1.1: 1.5. Pronotum widest at apical 2/5, abruptly narrowed at basal 1/3; pronotal disc with a pair of circular depressions, with shallow depression medially; hind margin medially and laterally slightly concave. Prosternal process reduced to a sharp keel between coxae ( Fig. 7 View FIGURES 7 – 8 ), with parallel sides from base to apex; procoxal cavities closed, long thin hypomeral lobes reaching apex of posternal process. Elytra elongate, about 1.5X longer than wide, dorsally flat. Apex of last ventrite with a shallow concave excision. Penis slender and weakly curved in lateral view ( Fig. 9 View FIGURES 9 – 17 a); in dorsal view, narrow and laterally parallel, subapically tapering, apex narrowly rounded ( Fig. 9 View FIGURES 9 – 17 b). Apex of endophallic sclerite curved with tiny teeth on apical margin ( Fig. 9 View FIGURES 9 – 17 b).

Female. Length 8.2–9.5 mm. Similar to male. Apex of last ventrite truncate. Sternite VIII medially weakly sclerotized ( Fig. 18 View FIGURES 18 – 25 ), apex truncate with dense long setae, spiculum short; however, well sclerotized in individuals from high mountains ( Fig. 19 View FIGURES 18 – 25 ) with spiculum apically widened, separated from apex, apex subdivided into two at middle. Spermathecal receptaculum strongly swollen ( Fig. 26 View FIGURES 26 – 32 ), abruptly narrowed between receptaculum and pump, pump narrow and curved, spermathecal duct wide, slightly projecting into receptaculum. Gonocoxae ( Fig. 33 View FIGURES 33 – 41 ) separated, tubular, apex truncate, with four or five long setae.

Diagnosis. This species is similar to Menippus hsuehleeae , sp. nov. with more prominent punctures on head and pronotum than elytra, but differs by lacking spots on pronotum and strong constriction at basal 1/3 of pronotum ( Fig. 1 View FIGURES 1 – 6 ).

Host plants. Betulaceae : Alnus formosana (Burkill ex Forbes & Hemsl.) Makino ; Ulmaceae : Zelkova serrata (Thunb.) Makino ; Urticaceae : Debregeasia orientalis C. J. Chen.

Distribution. This species is widespread in mountainous areas ( Fig. 42 View FIGURES 42 – 44 ) (elevation 1500–2500 m). A few specimens were also collected from areas below 1000 m elevation in north and east Taiwan during winter and early spring.

Biological notes. This species is apparently univoltine. Larvae were observed in spring. A few adults were collected in light traps.
