TENRECOMORPHA Butler 1972

Families: 1 family with 10 genera and 30 species:

Family Tenrecidae Gray 1821 (10 genera with 30 species and 2 subspecies)

Discussion: Included in suborder Soricomorpha of the Lipotyphla by Butler (1988) and by MacPhee and Novacek (1993). McKenna and Bell (1997:293) use the name Tenrecoidea (attributing it incorrectly to Gray, 1821:301) as a superfamily with the note ‘Proposed as suborder of Lipotyphla, coordinate with Erinaceomorpha , Soricomorpha , and Chrysochlorida’; however, usage of this name is undesirable (see above).
