scientific name

Phragmites australis (Cav.) Trin. ex Steud.
status

Cenchrus frutescens Linnaeus View in CoL , Species Plantarum 2: 1050. 1753.

"Habitat in America." [recte “Armenia” in Sp. Pl., ed. 2, 2: 1489. 1763] RCN: 7589.

Type not designated.

Original material: [icon] in Alpino, Pl. Exot.: 105, 104. 1627.

Current name: Phragmites australis (Cav.) Trin. ex Steud. View in CoL ( Poaceae ).

Note: Turland (in Taxon 44: 419. 1995) proposed the name for rejection but Greuter & Scholz (in Taxon 45: 522. 1996) described the Cretan plant figured by Alpino as a new species, Phragmites frutescens Scholz , thereby blocking the possibility of a transfer of the Linnaean epithet, and making the proposal unnecessary. The Committee for Spermatophyta (in Taxon 47: 863. 1998) therefore did not recommend acceptance of the proposal.
