Names.
Myanmar: thagya. English: chewing gum tree, chicle tree, sapodilla.
Range.
Central America. Cultivated in Myanmar.
Uses.
Bark and S eed: Used as a diuretic, tonic, and antipyretic.
Notes.
Medicinal uses of this species in India are discussed in Jain and DeFilipps (1991). Indigenous medicinal uses of this species in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands (India) are described by Dagar and Singh (1999).
Juice of the leaves and young fruits of M. zapota contain a saponin which, when ingested, causes diarrhea and mild skin irritation ( Lan et al. 1998).
