Patellapis (Chaetalictus) natalensis sp. n. Timmermann

Diagnosis. The male is similar to those of P. turneri and P. africana in having a row of several (up to 20), erect bristles on the posterior margin of S4 and a hairy, doso–lateral projection on the gonostylus. The male of P. natalensis is characterised by a row of about 20 bristles on the posterior margin of S4, of which the lateral ones are greatly enlarged. The female is unknown.

Description

Female. Unknown.

Male. Bl = 5,0mm. Head. L = 1,4mm; W = 1,6mm. Head wider than long ( Fig. 74a View FIGURE 74 ). Integument black except mandibles, malar area, clypeus, paraocular area and supraclypeal area partly reddish-brown. Clypeus, supraclypeal area, paraocular area and vertex covered with erect, brown and pallid brownish hairs. Mandibles simple. Antennae reddish-brown. Flagellomeres of normal structure (not knotty). A4 as long as A3.

Mesosoma. L = 1,0mm; W ( ITS) = 1,1mm. Integument black. Scutum shiny; sparsely punctate (i = 2,0–2,5d); surface finely reticulate ( Fig. 74b View FIGURE 74 ). Scutellum as illustrated in Fig. 74c View FIGURE 74 . Scutum, scutellum, metanotum, mesepisternum and propodeum with greyish to brownish, erect hairs. Pronotal lobe reddish-brown. Basal area of propodeum as illustrated in Fig. 74c View FIGURE 74 ; propodeum and marginal region of posterior truncation slightly shiny and coarsely sculptured. Wings. Slightly fuscouse apically. Legs. Integument reddish-brown. Vestiture greyish and pallid brownish. Metasoma. L = 2,6mm; W = 1,3mm. Integument brownish except the margins of T pallid brown; margins of T broadly translucent; metasomal terga T1 T2 as illustrated in Fig. 74d View FIGURE 74 . Apical plate broad; rounded apically. Posterior margin of S4with a sparse row of about 20, curled, erect bristles; bristles enlarged laterally. Metasomal sterna S5–S6 without dense hair patches ( Fig. 74e View FIGURE 74 ). S7 and S8 as illustrated in Fig. 74f View FIGURE 74 . Genitalia. Gonocoxa extensively dull; gonostylus with dorso-lateral, broad and long, hyaline projection; projection with a sparse row of long, curled hairs .

Type material ( 1 specimen). Holotype, male, Free State, Van Reenen , 23.–26.i.1927, leg. R. E. Turner, Brit. Mus. 1927–62, BMNH.

Etymology. Named for the previous South African province Natal.

Distribution ( Fig. 76). Only known from Van Reenen (Free State).
