The fossil species A. laevis Reid (1930: 49) was first described on the basis of fruit endocarp remains from the Eocene sediments of Brittany ( France). However, the extant A. laevis Wen (1993: 53) , a later homonym of the fossil species, was proposed in the result of transferring Pentapanax elegans Koorders (1919: 182) to Aralia since the name A. elegans has been already preoccupied by four species names:
(1) A. elegans Linden ex Koch (1862: 155) , widely known extant Aralia in European horticulture,
(2) A. elegans Cunn. ex Hill (1862: 18) , nom. illeg., an extant Australian plant,
(3) A. elegans Hort. ex Saporta (1863: 268) , nom. illeg., an extant plant described from the living collections of Paris Botanical Garden, and
(4) A. elegans Velenovský (1884: 13) , nom. illeg., a fossil species established on the basis of leaf remains from Europe [more details on homonyms of A. elegans see above].
Therefore, the name A. laevis J. Wen is a later illegitimate homonym and a new replacement name is thus proposed below:
