Female macroptera. Body largely yellowish ( Fig. 1 View FIGURES 1–10 ), but mesothorax and anterior angles of abdominal segments II to VII brownish. Head more or less brownish, a little darker than prothorax. Tube brownish subbasally. Antennal segments I and II pale brown, segment III yellowish, very weakly shaded distally, segments IV to IV brown, with basal 1/4–1/3 yellowish, segments VII and VIII uniformly brown. All femora weakly shaded with brown distally, all tibiae and tarsi yellow. Fore wings shaded with brown, but pale at base and median constriction. Prominent body setae almost colourless. Head ( Fig. 29 View FIGURES 29–35 ) a little wider than long, 0.95 times as long as wide in holotype; dorsal surface sculptured with transverse reticulation, but weak. Cheeks very weakly rounded, weakly narrowed to base. Postocular setae a little shorter than eye. Eyes 0.43–0.44 times as long as head in holotype. Antennal segments VII and VIII somewhat narrowly fused, segment VIII lanceolate, distinctly constricted at base ( Fig. 30 View FIGURES 29–35 ); segment III with three sense cones. Maxillary stylets short and V-shaped, retracted into 1/4 of head capsule; maxillary bridge distinct, but narrow and arched. Mouth cone rather pointed. Pronotum ( Fig. 29 View FIGURES 29–35 ) 0.67 times as long as head and 1.85 times as wide as long in holotype; pa and epim subequal in length, about 1/2 of the median pronotal length. Metanotum ( Fig. 32 View FIGURES 29–35 ) sculptured with polygonal reticulation, but very weak. Prospinasternum weakly developed, eroded. Mesopresternum and mesoeusternum widely fused ( Fig. 31 View FIGURES 29–35 ), with indistinct short sutures between them at both sides. Fore tarsi unarmed. Fore wings with 5–5 duplicated cilia. Pelta ( Fig. 34 View FIGURES 29–35 ) weakly developed, bell-shaped. Tergites well developed, tergites II to VII wider than pronotum; a median pair of setae well developed, almost as long as or a little longer than wing retaining setae on same tergite. S1 setae on tergite IX shorter than S2, 0.72–0.76 times as long as tube in holotype, S1 weakly expanded or blunt, S2 blunt or nearly pointed at apex. Tube ( Fig. 35 View FIGURES 29–35 ) 0.57 times as long as head in holotype. Anal setae a little shorter than tube .
Measurements. Female holotype (mac.) in microns. Distended body length 1520. Head length 150, width across cheeks 157. Compound eye dorsal length 65–66. Pronotum length 100, width 185. Fore wing length about 600. Tube length 86, width across base 50. Antenna length about 350, segments III–VIII length (width) as follows: 47 (29), 56 (30), 47 (24), 46 (20), 42 (19), 32 (12). Postocular setae 59–60. Pronotal aa 42–45, am 45–47, ml 42–44, pa 50–55, epim 50–53. S1 setae on tergite IX 62–65, S2 setae on tergite IX 73–76. Anal setae about 80.
Type series. Holotype female (mac.): Indonesia, Bali Is., Belimbing Sari , alt. about 70m, on dead branches, 29.vii.1984 (SO) . Paratypes: Indonesia, 2 females (mac.), collected with holotype .
Remarks. A. balianus has slender antennal segment VIII which is narrowly fused to the segment VII ( Fig. 30 View FIGURES 29–35 ), rather short head and short and V-shaped maxillary stylets ( Fig. 29 View FIGURES 29–35 ), and these character states are shared with A. vietnamensis , newly described below. From that species, however, it is easily distinguished by having three sense cones on the antennal segment III and largely yellow body colour ( Fig. 1 View FIGURES 1–10 ).
