Alpheopsis yaldwyni Banner & Banner, 1973 View in CoL

( Fig. 2 View FIGURE 2 )

Alpheopsis yaldwyni Banner & Banner 1973: 344 View in CoL , fig. 17; Bruce 1980: 43; Miya 1984: 73; Banner & Banner 1985: 9, fig. 9; Gosliner et al. 1996: 208, fig. 751; Hayashi 1996: 40, fig. 291e–g; Nomura et al. 1996: 11; Kuiter & Debelius 2009: 157. Lysmata kukenthali ?— Allen & Steene 1994: 142 (colour photo).

Material examined. Indonesia. 1 female ( MZB Cru 4034), southern Lombok, Tanjung Aan (east of Kuta), degraded coral reef flat with some seagrass and abundant rubble, under large pieces of coral rubble, 0.5–1 m, leg. D.L. Rahayu et al., 15 May 2014.

Taxonomic account. See Banner & Banner (1973); see also Banner & Banner (1985) for additional illustrations.

Habitat. Coral reefs and adjacent habitats, usually in deep crevices of dead coral heads or under large pieces of coral rubble. Depth range: 1 m to at least 20 m (A. Anker, pers. obs.).

Distribution. Indo-West Pacific: Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, southern Japan, Taiwan, Indonesia, Philippines, Australia, Vanuatu, French Polynesia ( Banner & Banner 1973, 1985; Hayashi 1996; present study; A. Anker, pers. obs., based on material deposited in ASIZ, FLMNH and MNHN).

Remarks. Alpheopsis yaldwyni is a wide-ranging, fairly common, but relatively rarely collected alpheid shrimp, with 20 or so recently collected specimens deposited in museums worldwide (A. Anker, pers. obs.). The species was previously known from Indonesia from a single male specimen collected in Rumah Tiga, Ambon ( Banner & Banner 1985), the present female thus representing the first record for Lombok. In life, A. yaldwyni may be easily recognised by its distinctive intense red banding ( Fig. 2 View FIGURE 2 , see also colour photographs in Gosliner et al. 1996; Kuiter & Debelius 2009).
