Eurycheilus Reis & Schaefer, 1992: 216 . Type species: Eurycheilus pantherinus Reis & Schaefer, 1992 . Type by monotypy. Gender: masculine. Preoccupied by Eurycheilus Septfontaine, 1970 , in fossil cephalopods.

Type species. Eurycheilichthys pantherinus ( Reis & Schaefer, 1992) View in CoL , by original designation.

Diagnosis. Eurycheilichthys is diagnosed within the Hypoptopomatinae by the uniquely derived presence of seven branched pectoral-fin rays (vs. five or six rays). It is also diagnosed by the possession of reduced filamentous gill rakers on the oral surfaces of the hyobranchial skeleton (vs. filamentous gill rakers large), and the presence of a distinct fleshy flap along the posterodorsal margin of the pectoralfin spine in adult males ( Fig. 1). It is further differentiated from most other hypoptopomatines by the presence of unicuspid accessory teeth on both the premaxilla and dentary (shared with Epactionotus , a few Parotocinclus species , Niobichthys ferrarisi , and Rhinolekos schaeferi ), and the possession of a greatly expanded lower lip, which extends close to or beyond the anterior margin of the pectoral girdle.
