Type (lectotype originally designated in B by Epling 1936: 245, destroyed; replaced lectotype designated by Harley & Pastore 2012: 12):— BRAZIL. Rio Grande do Sul, Cerro Agudo, 23 March 1823, F. Sellow 4580 (K 488241!).
Erect herbs, aromatic, 1 m high, basal stems decumbent, hispid. Leaves sessile or with a short petiole, 0.25–0.8 cm long, blade ovate, 2–6 × 1–2 cm, obtuse apex, base truncate or attenuate base, serrate or crenate margin, adaxial surface with slightly strigose pubescence, abaxial surface hispid or strigose. Flowers grouped in densely congested, more than 15- flowered cymes, sessile or with a short peduncle, up to 6 mm long, surround by an involucre of numerous bracteoles, narrow elliptic, 2–4 mm long, inconspicuous. Cymes arranged in elongated panicles, with ascending branches. Calyx 3–5.5 mm long, sub-glabrous to slightly strigose, teeth subulate, 0.5–1 mm, stiff. Corolla white or pale blue or blue color, 3–4 mm long, Stigma 7 mm long. Nutlets ellipsoid 1–1.5 mm, smooth, dark brown.
Distribution and habitat:— Cantinoa stricta grows in southern Brazil, Paraguay, northeastern Argentina and northern Uruguay.
