Perennial herbs, up to 1.5 m high, stems pilose with hispid appressed hairs. Leaves with petiole, 0.5–4 cm long, elliptic or ovate blade 3–15 × 2–5 cm, acute apex, acute attenuate base, hairs lax and long, sometimes multiseriate, randomly distributed over both surfaces, irregularly serrate margin. Capitula 1–1.5 cm diam., many-flowered, solitary, axillary to superior leaves, peduncle 1–3 cm long. Bracteoles 8–12 mm long, ovate, acuminate, strigose. Calyx 4–5 mm up to 7 mm in fruit, exterior pilose with some sessile glands, interior glabrous; teeth 2–3 mm long, sub-equal, triangular, aristate. Corolla white or pink, 5–10 mm long. Nutlets ovoid, 1–1.5 mm long, dark brown, smooth.

Remarks: — Hyptis marrubiastra Pohl ex Bentham (1833: 102) has been considered by Epling (1937: 310) as a synonym of Hyptis lappulacea . However the Pohl type, collected at Goias state, approaches more the brazilian species Hyptis sinuata Pohl. ex Bentham (1833: 103) , and furthermore this last species is frequent in Goias state, from where the type is from, and H. lappulaceae does not occur there (R.M. Harley, pers. comm.).

Distribution and habitat:— Hyptis lappulacea is present in southern Brazil, eastern Paraguay and northeastern Argentina in the provinces of Misiones and northern Corrientes, constituting a new record for this last country.

Selected specimens examined:— ARGENTINA. Corrientes. Santo Tomé, 27 km de Virasoro, camino Garruchos, 12 February 1972, Krapovickas 21646 (CTES!). Misiones: Cainguás, Predio UNLP, 14 March 2000, Biganzoli 788 (SI!). San Ignacio, Teyú Cuaré, 15 March 1951, Montes 15155 (SI!).
