Perennial herbs, up to 1 m high, stems densely hispid, mostly towards the apex. Leaves with a brief petiole 0.5–1.5 cm long, ovate blade, 2–4 × 2.5–3 cm, acute or obtuse apex, obtuse or cordate base, both surfaces hispid, irregularly serrate-dentate margin. Capitula 0.8–1.2 cm diam., many-flowered, solitary, axillary to superior leaves, peduncle 0.4–0.6 cm long. Bracteoles 6–7 mm long, linear and filiform, glabrous. Calyx 3 mm up to 6–7 mm in fruit, mid-tube deflexed in fruit, exterior sub-glabrous or pilose, interior glabrous; teeth 1.2–1.5 mm long, sub-equal, aristate. Corolla pale blue or pink color, 6 mm long. Nutlets narrow obovoid, 1.2 mm long, brown, smooth.

Remarks: — At G there are three duplicates (sheets) of Hassler 3747, the type material of Hyptis dumetorum var. inconcinna , one of them is here designated lectotype, following Arts. 8 and 9 of ICN ( McNeill et al. 2012; McNeill 2014).

Distribution and habitat: — Hyptis dumetorum grows in Bolivia (possibly introduced), S. Brazil, Paraguay and northern Argentina. It is found in sandy soils and dry areas.

Selected specimens examined:— ARGENTINA. Formosa: Clorinda, 5 January 1927, Venturi 9119 ( US!).
