Description. Male. Body length 3.9mm. Bristles brown. Anterior fronto-orbital 1/3 length of mid fronto-orbital; posterior fronto-orbital absent. Two pairs of dorsocentral bristles. One minute and one small lateral scutellar bristle. Head yellow with frons brown centrally, face white and pilose, gena and parafacial dirty white and pilose, back of head with three thin stripes radiating dorsally from foramen and palpus and first flagellomere black; gena approximately 1/5 eye height. Scutum yellow with central brown stripe. Scutellum brown. Pleuron brown with katepisternum yellow. Legs yellow with coxae white, base of hind femur light brown, base of hind tibia brown and tarsomeres 3 – 5 of fore tarsi brown. Wing infuscated on distal 1/3 and along R2+3 at intersection of vein r-m.
Male terminalia. ( Figs 26–28 View FIGURES 17 – 28 ) Sternite 5 slightly wider than long with medial desclerotization on posterior 2/5; desclerotized region surrounded by short bristles. Length and width of epandrium subequal; anterodistal margin subtriangular with apex rounded and slightly produced. Surstylus subtriangular, broadly rounded and with posterior margin sinuate; with long medial bristles and short marginal bristles. Cerci small and entirely divided. Hypandrium with two long and two short bristles. Pregonite wrinkled basally and with apical setulae. Ejaculatory apodeme 1/3 longer than hypandrium, widely arcuate and with apex truncated.
Female. Unknown.
Etymology. The specific epithet refers to the diagnostic black palpus.
Holotype. BOLIVIA. La Paz: Caranavi, ca. 10km NW, road to ENTEL tower, 1400m, 15°46’35”S, 67°35’48”W, dung baits, 13.iv.2001, S.A. Marshall (1ɗ, CBFC).
Comments. Hendelia nigripalpus can be distinguished from other neotropical Hendelia —including H. heliconiae , which has an overlapping distribution and similar male genitalia—by a black palpus and first flagellomere, and an almost entirely brown pleuron.
