Hendelia salebrosa View in CoL spec. nov.
( Figs 23–25 View FIGURES 17 – 28 , 29 View FIGURES 29 – 32 )
Description. Body length 3.6–5.3mm.
Male. Bristles brown. Anterior fronto-orbital 3/4 length of mid fronto-orbital; posterior fronto-orbital absent. Two pairs of dorsocentral bristles. One short and one minute lateral scutellar bristle. Head yellow (white below antenna) with palpus brown apically, frons dark yellow to orange, back of head with dark brown dorsal mottling and outer-dorsal margin of first flagellomere dark brown. Notum orange with medial stripe and scutellum brown. Pleuron light yellow with thin orange subnotal stripe that sometimes reaches midpoint of anepimeron. Legs yellow with coxae white, and base of hind tibia and tarsomeres 4 and 5 brown. Wing dusky on distal 1/3 with darker clouds around apices of R2+3 and R4+5.
Male terminalia. ( Figs 23–25 View FIGURES 17 – 28 ) Similar to terminalia of H. nigripalpus except anterodistal margin of epandrium long and very broadly rounded, surstylus with short rounded posteroventral “hook”, hypandrial bristles long, and pregonite half length of hypandrium with width approximately 1/4 length and distal 2/3 with shallow bumps.
Female. Externally similar to male except as follows: fore tarsi dark brown excluding base of first segment; back of head yellow; dorsal half of pleuron sometimes light brown to brown; wing clouded on distal 1/3 and with infuscation along R2+3 at intersection of vein r-m.
Female terminalia. ( Fig. 29 View FIGURES 29 – 32 ) Spermatheca globose with median transverse wrinkles; duct three times length of spermatheca. Ventral receptacle as long as spermatheca plus duct.
Etymology. The specific epithet is Latin for “rough and uneven”, referring to the textured surface of the pregonite.
Holotype. BOLIVIA. La Paz: Zongo, 16°06’32”S, 68°04’30”W, 18.iv.2001, S.A. Marshall (1ɗ, CBFC).
Paratypes. BOLIVIA. La Paz: Chulumani, Apa Apa Res., 2000m, 16°21’55”S, 67°30’21”W, 1.iv.2001, S.A. Marshall (1ɗ 1Ψ, DEBU), dung baits (1Ψ, USNM).
Comments. As in Hendelia boliviensis , H. salebrosa has a distinct dorsal stripe on the first flagellomere, but it can be distinguished from this species by the colour of the palpus and antenna, absence of the posterior frontoorbital and the shape of the internal female genitalia. The male genitalia of H. salebrosa are characteristic in that the epandrium is produced along the anterodistal margin as a large lobe and the surstylus is more strongly angled inwards.
