Agapetus pontona (Mosely) View in CoL
Figs 1 View FIGURES 1 – 3 a, 1b, 27
Synagapetus pontona Mosely , in Mosely & Kimmins 1953: 500.
Material examined: Holotype male: New South Wales: Hampton, BMNH ( Figs 1 View FIGURES 1 – 3 a, 1b); 54 samples from eastern Victoria, 7 small samples from several localities in eastern New South Wales, NMV; 2 samples from eastern Victoria, 3 samples from eastern New South Wales, 4 samples from the Australian Capital Territory, ANIC.
Diagnosis: This species is recognised by segment X in lateral view with its distal margin obliquely truncate. The gonopods in ventral view are elongate-triangular to rounded with a sharp, slender thornlike spur or tooth subapically on the inner side, usually part of a sclerotised ridge and sometimes with a small tooth abutting the larger one; in lateral view the gonopods are about twice as long as high. The cerci are somewhat club-shaped, but not as rounded as in A. cralus . The male of this species is distinguished from that of A. cralus by the angular shape of segment X, rather than rounded as in A. cralus , and from A. dayi by the shape of the cerci and absence of a spur or tooth medially on the inner ventral margin of each gonopod. Females exhibit no particularly distinctive features.
Forewing length: Male 3.0– 3.7 mm; female 3.4–4.0 mm.
Distribution: Often abundant and commonly collected in eastern Victoria, less so in New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory, but taken from as far north as the Barrington Tops in the Northeast.
