Gentiana elwesii C.B. Clarke (1883: 115) View in CoL

Type:— INDIA. Sikkim (Yumthang), 3900 ‒ 4600, 4 September1849, J.D. Hooker s.n. (lectotype K [barcode K 000843977, image!] designated here).

Notes: Clarke (1875:439), in his treatment of Indian Gentianaceae , described a species in the genus Gentiana without providing a specific epithet. He marked it as Gentiana sp. no. 32, and cited “In Sikkim, ad 13000 ‒ 16000 ped., Hooker f. & Th. [Thomson]”. He ( Clarke, 1883:115), later described Gentiana sp. no. 32 as G. elwesii to honor H. J. Elwes, who also collected this species in Sikkim Himalaya. We have found five specimens with this name, four collected by Hooker, three in K and one in GH, and one collected by Elwes, deposited in K. Of these specimens, the one collected by Hooker from Yumthang with barcode K 000843977, and closely corresponding with the protologue, is here designated as the lectotype (Art. 9.2, ICN, McNeill et al., 2012) of G. elwesii ( Fig. 1).
